(Harrisburg, Pa.) On April 22, 2009, the National Civil War Museum (NCWM), located in Harrisburg, Pa., held a ribbon-cutting event to unveil its newly enclosed Kunkel Rutherford Observatory. Ganflec Architects & Engineers, the architectural affiliate company of Gannett Fleming, was recognized at the event for its role in this design-build project. Gannett Fleming is an international planning, design, and construction management firm. Featured speakers at the event included Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed and John Stark of the John Crain Kunkel Foundation, the organization that funded this project.
Prior to being enclosed, the existing observation deck inhibited visitors from entering or exiting the deck in order to maintain temperature and humidity levels for the care and preservation of artifacts on display. The new observatory space allows visitors to enjoy the panoramic view of the Susquehanna Valley.
The classical architectural exterior was designed to create a new enclosure to fuse with the existing monumental and classical elements of the NCWM exterior. The observatory interior space utilized the existing deck low brick walls to unify the new enclosed space with the existing NCWM brick exterior. The observatory’s insulated roof, ceiling, windows, and exterior perimeter walls will provide energy-efficient heated and air conditioned space.
Ganflec provided 3D modeling and rendering services for NCWM to present the observatory concept for funding. Ganflec also provided services to model the NCWM for display on Google Earth. In addition, the firm provided complete architectural and structural design, construction/permit documents, and construction administration services.
Wohlsen Construction Company constructed the observatory, in partnership with NCWM, the John Crain Kunkel Foundation, Ganflec, and McClure Company. The following subcontractors also played a key role in making this project successful: The Houck Group, G.R. Sponaugle, Woolf Steel, GEM Wall & Ceiling, Nolt & Nolt, Pella Windows, and Fritz Fire Protection, among others. The observatory took eight weeks to complete.
