(Harrisburg, Pa.) Ganflec Architects & Engineers, Inc. (Ganflec), a full-service architectural firm and affiliate of Gannett Fleming, an international consulting firm, has been awarded two Green Building Awards from the Green Building Association (GBA) of Central Pennsylvania. The Campus Square Project was recognized with an award in the Sustainable Sites category, and the Blue Chip Federal Credit Union Project was honored with an award in the Materials and Resources category. Both projects are located in Harrisburg, Pa.

The Campus Square Project is part of one of the most comprehensive urban renewal projects ever undertaken in Harrisburg. One of the greenest buildings in Central Pennsylvania, this four-story, 73,000-square-foot building serves as a benchmark for sustainable design and construction. Remediation of an existing Brownfield site was performed, including the removal of nine underground storage tanks. The geothermal HVAC system incorporated 46, 400-feet-deep wells under the building and a 42-kilowatt PV solar panel array on the roof. The total project cost was approximately $14.8 million.

The Blue Chip Federal Credit Union (BCFCU) addition and renovation project resulted in a highly efficient, visible, and unique facility that provides numerous environmentally and economically sustainable benefits. For example, through the reuse of the existing building and land on which it sits, project costs were greatly reduced, which allowed high-end materials to be incorporated; long-term costs of operation will also be reduced. Such features as on-site renewable energy reduce grid loads and dependence on polluting fuels, and new plantings, white roofing, and limited paving reduce heat island effect and air conditioning loads.
