The Delaware Department of Transportation wanted a distinctive
style to the first of three planned toll administration facilities
on its new north-south highway, State Route 1. Additional criteria
included the ability for supervisory personnel to have an unobstructive
view up and down the highway and the desire to relate
to the historic architecture of the Dover area. The solution incorporates
a semicircular Toll Sergeants Office with 180 degree visibility
on the highway side of the building and the use of materials and
forms reminiscent of the local historic buildings but in a contemporary
composition.
Project Features:
- 8,000-square-foot toll administration facility
- 400-foot tunnel to a 12-lane barrier toll plaza
- Handmade brick exterior with cast stone accents and metal
standing seam roof
- Integral security features including bullet resistant glazing,
intrusion detection, video surveillance, and access control
- 70-square-foot Class 1 bank vault
